The assault on Mosul was months in the planning and within hours it was clear it would not be an easy victory.
Iraqi and Kurdish forces started moving in on the Islamic State stronghold and immediately came under attack.
Among those with them, our Chief Correspondent Stuart Ramsay. He travelled with Division One of the Kurdish Peshmerga to the town of Bertella to the east of Mosul.
