The
full scale of the damage done by Islamic State militants to the
historic city of Nimrud in northern Iraq is emerging, after government
forces recaptured the site two days ago. The United Nations called the
destruction at the time a war crime.
The BBC is the first international broadcaster to reach the scene and see the scale of the damage.
Richard Galpin reports.
Nimrud
is the Arabic and Assyrian Neo-Aramaic name for the ancient Assyrian
city of Kalhu, located 30 kilometres south of the city of Mosul, and 5
kilometres south of the village of Selamiyah, in the Nineveh plains in
northern Mesopotamia. Wikipedia
