U.S. President Barack Obama has insisted he will help President-elect Donald Trump make a smooth transition into the White House.

He said he believed that America under Trump's leadership would remain a "pillar of strength and a beacon of hope" to the people around the world.

Kim Mok-yeon tells us more.

Giving his first press conference since Trump's election victory,... President Obama promised America's continuous role in maintaining order and prosperity around the world.

Before embarking on his final overseas trip as president, Obama said President-elect Trump had also expressed great interest in maintaining Washington's core strategic relationships.

" I think that's one of the most important functions I can serve at this stage during this trip is to let them know during this trip that there is no weakening resolve when it comes to maintaining a strong and robust NATO relationship and a recognition that those alliances aren't just good for Europe, they're good for the United States and they are vital for the world."

Obama said that, during their talks last week, he told Trump that "gestures matter" and that it's important to reach out to groups that do not support his policies.

He said President-elect Trump was "sincere" about being a president for all Americans, and he urged the public to give Trump some time to adjust to his new responsibilities.

The news conference came as the Kremlin reported that President-elect Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed during telephone talks to combine efforts to normalize the strained ties between the two countries.

The two said the current relationship between Russia and the U.S. is extremely unsatisfactory and agreed to further communicate by phone and arrange a meeting in person at a later date.
