This
week President Recep Tayep Erdogan shut down 15 mostly pro-Kurdish
media and jailed 12 staff, including the editor in chief of Turkey’s
oldest newspaper. Cumhuriyet is critical of Erdogan but even the wildest
conspiracy theories couldn’t link the staunchly secular daily to the
religious Gulenist movement accused of plotting last July's failed coup.
Is the crackdown about an attempt to overthrow Erdogan or part of a
push to increase presidential powers?
