Osteoporosis
is a condition where bones lose their strength and are more likely to
break, sometimes also referred to as brittle bone disease. One in two
women and one in five men over the age of 50 experience fractures as a
result of low bone strength, with the spine, hips and wrists being most
commonly affected. Women are particularly susceptible after the
menopause due to the loss of oestrogen, causing bone strength to rapidly
decrease and making fractures more likely. In this video, Dr. Dawn
Harper shares some facts and common misconceptions about osteoporosis,
discussing risk factors, treatment options and where to go for further
advice.
