The New US defence secretary James Mattis dropped a metaphorical bombshell at the NATO meeting in Brussels: "If the rest don't pay more the US may moderate its commitment." This after Donald Trump had declared NATO to be "obsolete." There is concern in capitals across the Atlantic, that the organization that had been a bastion of world peace and security for nearly 70 years should be so dismissed by the Businessman-in-chief. What future for NATO?
