Ukraine - As it happened. cyberattack / Україна - як це сталося. Кібератак: FRANCE 24 English

Published on 28 Jun 2017

The virus looks like this...A screen of red text...that instructs its victims to pay 300 dollars in bitcoin to regain access to the infected computer's files. At this Ukrainian television station, the ransomware spread like wild fire...4. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Vitaly Kovach, Channel 24 news department editor-in-chief:... the computer became uncontrollable. A chain reaction started, the first, the second, third, fourth, fifth (computer)… and it spread across the whole newsroom."Ukrainian's central bank, post office, Kiev's airport, and even Chernobyl's nuclear monitoring system have been infected... The Ukrainian governement said they are working hard to get to the bottom of who's behind this attack, with some pointing at Russia and efforts to destabilise the country:14. (SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) SPOKESMAN OF UKRAINIAN INTERIOR MINISTRY, YAROSLAV TRAKALO, SAYING:...Complaints are all being registered. Cyber police representatives are heading to the institutions, they are working to prevent dissemination of this harmful software and elimination of its consequencesBut finding out who's doing this and their motives could be tricky, as viruses, like this one have become increasingly sophisticated:SOUNDBITE 2 - Dave Waterson, CEO, SentryBay cyber-security (man, English, 25 sec):"The signatures of these attacks are changing too quickly for conventional anti-virus to keep up. //"This is a threat that's not going to go away any time soon. It's not going to be decreasing, it's going to be increasing in severity." Already the virus has spread across the globe. French construction company Saint Gobain, German rail Deutsche Bahn, Russian energy giant Rosneft and the US pharmaceutical company Merk are just some of the private firms to have been hit.Cyber experts believe the ransomware is using a Windows loophole...one that was once used by the US' National Security Agency...but unlike last month's Wannacry virus, this one doesnt seem to have a kill switch...which could make it all the more dangerous...
