Yemen - War; the world looks away | DW Documentary (war documentary)

Published on 17 Aug 2018
Yemen has become a humanitarian catastrophe. The country has been devastated by a civil war and Yemen is facing the worst famine in decades. [Online until: 15 September 2018] The proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, the bitter conflict between Sunnis and Shias, has devastated Yemen and laid the foundations for radicalization and terrorism. Our reporters have been there - a land usually closed off to foreign journalists. Ten thousand fatalities, 300,000 internal displacements and as many as two million refugees - the United Nations says the country is going through its worst humanitarian crisis since the Second World War. And yet, the outside world seems to hear little or no news about this Middle Eastern conflict.

The warring parties have all but sealed the country off. ‘Yemen: The World Looks Away’ offers unprecedented insights into the plight of a country where bombs, battles, famine and disease have ravaged the population. Our reporters traveled from Aden in the south of the country to Sanaa in the north, crossing the frontline that divides them at Tais. They were accompanied by Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, one of the few people who have actually traveled widely within the country. ‘Yemen: The World Looks Away’ portrays a country destroyed by civil war, caught up in the struggles between regional powers and all but ignored by the international community.
