UK - 40,000 deaths: UK second only to United States in passing grim milestone: BBC News 7.68M subscribers

The UK has passed a grim milestone — more than 40,000 people have now died after testing positive for coronavirus. Britain is only the second country in the world to reach that number, after the United States which has a population five times the size of the UK.

357 deaths were recorded in the latest 24 hour period, bringing the total across the UK to 40,261. There is new evidence that the numbers of new infections in the community is falling.

An Office for National Statistics study of adults and children in private households estimates that 1 in 1,000 people in England tested positive for the coronavirus in the last week of May.

That’s down from last week's estimate of 1 in 400. But it does not include people in hospitals and care homes. However, one study suggests that the number of new cases is some part of England may still be increasing.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reports from Health Editor Hugh Pym, Allan Little and Science Editor David Shukman.
