The current tensions between Ukraine and Russia have deep historical roots.
Russia and other nations have long sought to determine Ukraine’s destiny, contributing to the rise of Ukrainian nationalism and demands for self-determination.
In the Great Famine of the 1930s, as many as four million Ukrainians died during the forced collectivisation of Ukraine’s farms by the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.
The bitterness remains to this day. Clive Myrie presents a BBC News at Ten special report by Fergal Keane from Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, who met some of the last survivors of the famine.
