The opening day of the Rio Olympics got off to a shaky start with some security scares.

A stray bullet pierced the tent of the press area at the equestrian centre, and the bomb squad was called in to conduct a controlled explosion of an unattended backpack near the finish line of the men's Olympic cycling road race.

There were also reports of logistical issues, with fans queuing for hours and some missing events entirely.

Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports from Rio de Janeiro.

A third of Russia's athletes will be banned from competing at the Rio Olympics, after a state-sponsored doping scandal that has gone right to the wire of the opening day.

The International Olympic Committee says 118 of Russia's three-hundred-eighty-nine athletes will be prevented from taking part.

Two-hundred-71, or roughly 70-percent of the national team, have been cleared.

Included in the list of those who cannot compete in Rio are Moscow's guaranteed gold earners and title defenders.

The announcement comes on the eve of the opening ceremony of the Games.
