Korea confirmed the third case of cholera in the last 24 hours... and latest findings have concluded that all three Cholera patients were infected by the same kind of bacteria.
Now, that will make it easier for the health authorities to trace and analyze the outbreak.
Our Kim Jung-soo has more. The Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have verified on Thursday that the three Cholera victims recently connected to the city of Geoje, Gyeonsangnamdo province were infected by a genetically-identical bacteria.
The results of a genetic fingerprinting test also show that this bacteria is different from past Cholera-toxins that have historically affected the country.
Because of this, officials say they are looking into the possibility that the new bacteria may have been introduced through foreign channels.
The third and most recent patient, a 63-year old man, had shown symptoms of diarrhea beginning August 21st, after consuming squid and sardines purchased from a fish-market in Geoje city.
His illness was confirmed as Cholera on August 30th.
The control center had observed the first case of Cholera-infection this year around August 10th, when a native of Gwangju who had just returned from a trip to Geoje complained of extreme vomiting and dehydration.
His illness was finally identified as Cholera on August 22nd .
The second Cholera victim meanwhile was a native resident of Geoje.
She started experiencing related symptoms on August 15th, and was diagnosed with Cholera on August 25th.
According to the center, this recent Cholera outbreak is the first in over 15 years.
Korea has had a series of significant cholera outbreaks over the years.
In 2001, there were 162 individuals infected with Cholera, with most occurrences concentrated in the Gyeongsang Province.
There were 145 infected people in 1980, 113 in 1991, and 68 in 1995.
The control center has stressed that the outbreak must be monitored with utmost care.
"So far, over 100 people have reported symptoms of diarrhea in Geoje city alone."
And in response to the recent test-results, the center has also said it will strengthen tests analyzing the waters of Geoje-city to find the exact cause of the outbreak.
