Russia - 'We cannot remain indifferent': Russian star ballerina Olga Smirnova quits Bolshoi Ballet | CNN

17 March 2022

CNN's Oscar Holland wrote these sentences. Olga Smirnova, one of Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet stars, has quit the company because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and will instead dance for the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam.

After denouncing the conflict as being unjust, the St. Petersburg-born ballerina has decided to move away. The Dutch National Ballet said that Smirnova had been welcomed with open arms. She is expected to make her debut there with the staging of "Raymonda," which premieres in early April.

Smirnova joined the Bolshoi Ballet in 2011 and has since taken lead roles in performances of "Swan Lake" and "Giselle," among others. She has toured internationally with the troupe and appeared as a guest performer for the American Ballet Theatre and the Vienna State Ballet. Smirnova wrote on Telegram that she is against war with all her soul.
