It began as a military operation. Now, though, it’s a massive onslaught on the well-being, indeed the lives, of countless innocent civilians. 

 

Residential areas have been razed to the ground. Many people killed in their own homes. Families, divided. Hundreds of thousands of mostly women and children forced to leave the country. 

 

How many will never return? It’s impossible to say. And the worst could still be yet to come. So, on another special edition of To The Point, we ask: Putin's war: No mercy for civilians?

Жилые кварталы сравняли с землей. Многие люди были убиты в собственных домах. Семьи, разделенные. Сотни тысяч, в основном женщин и детей, вынуждены покинуть страну.

GENEVA — The United Nations human rights office said on Tuesday that it had verified 1,335 civilian casualties in Ukraine, including 474 killed and 861 injured, since Russia’s invasion began on Feb. 24.

But the civilian toll was incomplete pending corroboration of reports, it said in a statement: “This concerns, for example, the towns of Volnovakha, Mariupol, Izium where there are allegations of hundreds of civilian casualties.”
