President Donald Trump has fired the acting Attorney General after she refused to defend his controversial immigration order.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Daniel Ragsdale was fired just two hours later without explanation.

Acting Attorney General Sally Yates, a Democratic appointee, was accused of 'betraying' America after she directed Justice Department attorneys not to defend Trump's so called 'Muslim ban' on Monday. She said she was not convinced the order was lawful.

Dana Boente was sworn in as acting attorney general at 9pm on Monday in a hastily arranged ceremony after Trump fired his predecessor. He has already issued an order for the Justice Department to defend Trump's executive order.

Meanwhile Thomas Homan has been appointed to take over as Acting Director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency from Ragsdale. 

Senator Ted Cruz, once Trump's presidential candidate rival, has defended his decision to fire the 'lawless' Yates saying the president was 'exactly right.'

'After eight long years of a lawless Obama Department of Justice, it is fitting - and sad - that the very last act of the Obama DOJ is for the Acting AG to defy the newly elected President, refuse to enforce the law, and force the President to fire her,' he wrote on Facebook.

He added that Yates joined the 'ignominious succession' of Attorneys General, from Eric Holder to Loretta Lynch, 'who put brazen partisan interests above fidelity to law.'

'Yates' lawless partisanship highlights why the Senate needs to act now - and Senate Democrats should end their extreme political obstruction and delay - and confirm Jeff Sessions immediately.'


Earlier, CNN reported that Yates wrote a letter to lawyers explaining: 'My responsibility is to ensure that the position of the Department of Justice is not only legally defensible, but is informed by our best view of what the law is after consideration of all the facts.'

'In addition, I am responsible for ensuring that the positions we take in court remain consistent with this institution's solemn obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right,' she continued. 

'At present, I am not convinced that the defense of the executive order is consistent with these responsibilities nor am I convinced that the executive order is lawful,' she concluded. 

A statement from the White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer stated that Yates has 'betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States.'

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has spoken in the Commons calling the U.S. travel ban 'highly controversial', while also reminding the House of the UK's alliance with the States for our national security.

Boris Johnson has insisted no UK citizens will be affected by Donald Trump's controversial travel ban.
The Foreign Secretary said he had received assurances from the US administration that the restrictions would make 'no difference' to Britons - even if they are dual nationals.

Mr Johnson also repeated his belief that the temporary rules - denying entry to nationals from seven mainly Muslim countries - were 'divisive, discriminatory and wrong'.


But he flatly dismissed furious demands to withdraw the invite for the US president to come for a state visit - saying there was 'absolutely no reason' why the event should go ahead.

The statement to the House of Commons will provide some welcome clarity after a message on website of the US embassy in London this morning said dual nationals would be refused visas.

The developments followed two days of chaos day in which Olympic starMo Farah and Tory MP Nadhim Zahawi warned they could be among those prevented from seeing their families in America.

Mr Johnson told MPs: ‘I’m able to provide the following clarification. The general principle is that all British passport holders remain welcome to travel to the US.

‘We have received assurances from the US embassy that this executive order will make no difference to any British passport holder, irrespective of their country of birth or whether they hold another passport.’
He added: ‘In any case, the executive order is a temporary measure intended to last for 90 days, until the US system has added new security precautions.

'This is of course a highly controversial policy which has caused unease and I repeat that this is not an approach that this Government would take.’

Mr Johnson hailed Mrs May’s ‘highly successful visit’ to the White House on Friday and said maintaining a good working relationship with the US administration enabled the UK to stand up to President Trump when he oversteps the mark.

‘Let me conclude by reminding the House of the vital importance of this country’s alliance with the United States - on defence, intelligence and security we work together more closely than any other two countries in the world,’ he said.

‘That relationship is overwhelmingly to our benefit.

‘The Prime Minister’s highly successful visit to the White House last week, underlying the strength of that trans-Atlantic alliance.

Dramatic footage has emerged showing the moment a Kurdish peshmerga unit surrounded a group of ISIS fighters in a building on the outskirts of Mosul.

Colonial Pipeline Company confirmed that a man had died and that five others were taken to hospital for treatment after the blast, which was close to where a line burst and leaked thousands of gallons of gasoline last month. 

The explosion near Helena, to the south of Birmingham, sent flames and thick smoke soaring over the forest and Colonial said that it had shut down its main pipeline in the area, prompting fresh fears of a shortage.
