Several dodgy people are meeting each other in a mysterious house. A necklace was stolen, one or more of them are involved in this crime. The grotesque situation leads into a wild and action-packed chase between a bus and a train, which crashes spectacular in the harbor of London at the end.

Hitchcock actually did not want to make this movie. The original story, a play of J.J. Farjean was so bad and clichee-ridden, that he didn´t expect it to make a good movie. Hitchcock made ​​a virtue out of necessity and produced a grotesque! The charm of......
 Though the opening credits confirm the picture's title is Number Seventeen, much of the promotional material (as per graphic above) and many databases refer to Number 17.

The shady Carl Verloc runs a cinema with his wife Sylvia and their little brother Steve in London's East End. Business is bad, the little family has constantly worries about money. Without the knowledge of the wife, Verloc earns extra money for acts of sabotage on behalf of a secret organization. Scotland Yard has already suspected him. A policeman has been working undercover in a grocery store in the neighbourhood observing Verloc.

A sabotage to the London power grid, initiated by Verloc, does not have the desired effect. So he is forced to make an even worse attack, blood has to flow! Verloc is ordered to place a bomb in a train station locker. He gets the bomb, but he did not want to deposit it in the locker himself. He sends the small Steve with the bomb package and urges him to deliver it before a certain time. Steve of course has no idea what he carries through London and is wasting time. In a tram the bomb goes off and kills many people, including the boy. When Mrs. Sylvia Verloc hears about the death of her brother and realizes, that her husband is to blame, she stabs him with a kitchen knife .....

This spy story takes the viewers into the Scottish Highlands. Richard Hannay, who is suspected of murder, tries to get to a secret formula using the memory genius Mr. Memory. The police and a foreign power are chasing him. He flees to Scotland and meets the lovely Pamela. After initial reluctance she helps him. Following a turbulent escape, Hannay finds the formula that reveals the true culprits and can finally rehabilitate himself.

This early Hitchcock Movie has a typical "Hitchcock Story"! It is the story of the innocent hero, who has to prove his own innocence and restore his reputation. In some later films (sabotage, North by Northwest, The Lady Vanishes) Hitchcock works with the same scheme.
