Surrounded
by men, Donald Trump signs an anti-abortion executive order reinstating
a policy that would undermine family planning around the world.SOT Sean
Spicer, WH press secretary "The president, it's no secret, has made it
very clear that he's a pro-life president. He wants to stand up for all
Americans including the unborn, and I think the reinstatement of this
policy is not just something that echoes that value but respects
taxpayer funding as well."US law already bans the use of American
taxpayer money for abortion services anywhere, but the Mexico City
policy, also known as the Global Gag rule, takes it even further. It
freezes federal funding to NGOs in poor countries that advocate
abortion, or even just discuss abortion as an option in family
planning.Pro-choice advocates have condemned the move, with one group
calling it "the beginning of the Trump administration's agenda to punish
women everywhere."The head of the UN Foundation also criticised the
decision, saying the restrictions jeopardise the health and well-being of
the world's most vulnerable girls and women.SOT DLS quote Kathy Calvin «
This action will do more than change policy; it will make it more
difficult for millions of girls and women to access the contraception
and health care they need to determine their futures. Now is the time
to build on progress, not reverse it."The policy has gone back and
fourth under Republican and Democratic administrations.President Reagan
first enacted the rule in 1984.Bill Clinton repealed it, then George
Bush re-enacted it, before Barack Obama again lifted the restrictions.
