Holding the southern city of Mykolaiv is key to Ukraine’s strategy particularly after Russian forces struck the Zatoka Bridge in the neighbouring Odessa region, linking the area with Romania.

Mykolaiv’s Varvarovsky Bridge is now the only one in the region connecting the two banks of the River Bug. Targeting infrastructure appears to be a key part part of Russia's war strategy in southern Ukraine. FRANCE 24's Luke Shrago and Tarek Kai report from the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv.
