Russian troops have stolen around 600,000 tons of Ukrainian grain during the war, according to UAC, a Ukrainian agricultural producers union. Of this, around 100,000 tons of wheat worth more than $40 million have been shipped to Syria over the past three months, the Ukrainian embassy in Lebanon told Reuters earlier this month.
Russia has already stolen 400,000 tonnes of Ukrainian grain Looting is part of Russia's state policy as Russia has already stolen about 400,000 tonnes of grain in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories and Russian soldiers carry off even toilet bowls from private houses.
On June 8, the deputy head of Ukrainian agriculture producers union UAC said Russia has stolen about 600,000 tonnes of grain from occupied territory and exported some of it. Russia calls its action in Ukraine a "special military operation" saying its aim is to disarm and "denazify" its neighbour.
More grain thefts The Ukrainian Defense Ministry estimates that at least 400,000 tons of grain has been stolen and taken out of Ukraine since Russia's invasion. Mykola Solsky, Ukraine's minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, said this week it is "sent in an organized manner in the direction of Crimea.
The alarm sounded by Washington reinforced Ukrainian government accusations that Russia has stolen up to 500,000 tons of Ukrainian wheat, worth $100 million, since Russia’s invasion in February.
Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine has captured some of the most productive agricultural land in what is one of the world’s great breadbaskets, disrupting supplies and pushing up food prices. Russian forces have also stolen grain and equipment, the Ukrainian government and farmers say. Now, entire farms are being taken, some farmers say.

But Ukrainian grain shipments from its Black Sea ports have stalled since Russia invaded, with some 20 million tonnes of grain stuck in Ukraine. The war, together with Western sanctions against Russia, has sent the prices of grain, cooking oil, fertiliser and energy soaring.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said the US believes Russia is stealing and selling Ukrainian grain. “There are credible reports … that Russia is pilfering Ukraine’s grain exports to sell for its own profit,” Blinken said at a State Department conference on food security issues arising from the invasion of Ukraine.
Ukraine's Defense Ministry said Thursday an estimated 400,000 tons of grain had been stolen to date. Farmers and others in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia have provided CNN with details of multiple thefts.
Satellite images have shown a Russian ship allegedly carrying stolen grain from Ukraine arriving in Syria, according to reports. The images, provided by Maxar Technologies, show the Matros Pozynich in the Syrian port of Lattakia on May 27th. This was reportedly the ship’s second trip to Syria in the past four weeks, CNN reported.
Russian troops stole almost 2,000 tons of grain in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The Prosecutor General’s Office says it investigates two criminal cases of violations of the laws and customs of war in the region.
