The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War.

By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf. As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war against the forces of international communism itself. After some early back-and-forth across the 38th parallel, the fighting stalled and casualties mounted with nothing to show for them. Meanwhile, American officials worked anxiously to fashion some sort of armistice with the North Koreans.

The alternative, they feared, would be a wider war with Russia and China–or even, as some warned, World War III. Finally, in July 1953, the Korean War came to an end. In all, some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives in what many in the U.S. refer to as “the Forgotten War” for the lack of attention it received compared to more well-known conflicts like World War I and II and the Vietnam War. The Korean peninsula is still divided today.

Korea's national budget next year may, for the first time, exceed 400 trillion won,... or about three-hundred-62 billion U.S. dollars. 

That's roughly double the amount it was back in 2005.

Officials say the estimate is based on the government and ruling party's recent agreement to increase the 2017 budget by three to four percent from this year.

Key contributors to the rise include programs to improve youth employment, the chronically low birthrate and aging society.

The amount set aside for health, welfare, and jobs is expected to hit a record of over one-hundred-18 billion dollars.

The International Monetary Fund expects the Korean economy to expand less than three percent this year due to various structural restraints.

However, it welcomes recent fiscal measures and monetary easing aimed at tackling the challenges hindering growth.

Kim Min-ji reports. 

The Korean economy faces a number of structural headwinds going forward.
In its annual assessment of Asia's fourth largest economy,... the IMF says it expects Korea to grow two-point-seven percent this year.

The agency says there are several structural constraints on the country, including a rapidly aging population, a heavy reliance on exports and lagging productivity.

However,... the growth outlook unchanged from its previous projection,... and the IMF also maintained its forecast for next year at three percent.

The IMF holds bilateral discussions with member countries every year to review their economic developments and fiscal policies.

The agency says it supports the Korean government's push for corporate restructuring in order to bolster the country's growth potential.

Korea's shipbuilding industry has been at the center of the restructuring drive -- amid an industry wide slump and a drastic decline in orders.

Major shipbuilders are already engaging in aggressive downsizing and tens of thousands of workers are expected to lose their jobs this year.

The government announced a stimulus package,... which includes a ten billion U.S. dollar budget supplement, in order to cushion the negative impact,... as well as support job creation.

The Bank of Korea also cut key rate to a record low of one-point-two-five percent in June to prop up the economy.

Down the line,... the IMF says a carefully targeted expansion of social expenditure could help reduce inequality in Korea,... as well as boost consumption and bolster productivity.

Just about a week before its official launch next Friday... Samsung Electronics unveiled its Galaxy Note 7 in Seoul today.

It's already been hailed by some as a phablet innovation,... with key features including enhanced water resistance and bio-metric authentication.

Our Kim Min-ji tries it out for herself. 

More freedom and greater convenience.

That's what Samsung Electronics is promoting in its latest addition to the Galaxy series -- the Note 7 -- which the company unveiled on its home turf at a media event on Thursday.

Samsung gave the device the number seven, even though the previous device in the series was the Note 5, in order to line up with the Galaxy S7 smartphone launched earlier in the year.

Above all, it says it put great effort into breaking the perception that there is no end to innovation. "Samsung Electronics was the pioneer of the tablet smartphone. The Note 7 is more complete. We hope to open a new era in the global market. We put a great deal of emphasis on using top-notch technology and boosting the software and services."

The phablet, which has a price tag of roughly 890 U.S. dollars,... is similar in appearance to the Galaxy S7 Edge.

Samsung has stepped up the features of the S-Pen, allowing for underwater use,... as well as a function that offers foreign language translation.

Also creating a lot of buzz... the Note 7 comes with iris recognition, promising users more security and greater privacy.

The feature is the first of its kind in the Galaxy series. "In a split second,... users can unlock their smartphone and start mobile banking without the hassle of having to go through complex verification procedures."

Samsung has started taking pre-orders for the device,... and over 200-thousand people signed up in the first two days.

That's about double what it was for the Galaxy S7, released in March. "Samsung's marketing and promotion of the Note 7 have boosted its early popularity. The product is actually very impressive,... especially the S-pen and biometric authentication. Sales are expected to surpass those of its predecessor."

While Apple is scheduled to release its new iPhone next month,... experts say that unless it has some game-changing features,... Samsung can expect to see strong sales,... which could help lift the profits of its mobile division in the latter half of the year.

The Bank of Korea has held its key interest rate steady at 1-point-2-5 percent.
A widely expected decision as the Korean economy faces lingering uncertainties both at home and abroad,... as well as the impact of the latest government stimulus measures.

Hwang Ji-hye takes a closer look. 

Korea's central bank took a wait-and-see approach in August as it held its monthly monetary policy meeting on Thursday.

It kept its key interest rate unchanged at one-and-a-quarter percent,... leaving it at its historic low for the second straight month. The Bank of Korea's decision was in line with market expectations... that it will want to see whether the government's stimulus package coupled with a rate cut in June... will help bolster the economy that's been in the doldrums. 

The top central banker said he is fully aware of the risks stemming from low key rates. "Financial watchdogs are implementing and reviewing various measures to tackle household debt. The BOK is also closely monitoring the effects of these measures, as we agree it's not desirable for this debt to rise for a prolonged period of time. If needed, the bank will also consider taking measures." Despite the government's tighter guidelines on loans, they have not been able to slam the brakes on snowballing debt levels.

The total amount tops one trillion U.S. dollars.

Concerns are growing that a possible rate hike from the U.S. Federal Reserve could exacerbate the problem as Korea will eventually face the need to follow suit due to risks of massive capital outflows. But with external uncertainties like Brexit and better-than-expected second quarter growth mainly boosted by the government efforts to stimulate spending, speculation for another rate cut in the last quarter this year is on the rise. "Without the swift passing of the supplementary budget, I don't think that the recovery will continue so to the second half of the year the BOK might see some downside risks and they will give more dovish comments."

And although being very cautious, the top central banker did leave the door open for additional rate cuts. "While the BOK governor said it's true that the country's key rate is inching towards its so-called lower bound after a series of gradual rate trims over the years... he added that there's still room for more easing down the line.

It was a widely expected decision... as the Korean economy faces lingering uncertainties at home and abroad.

Following its monthly monetary policy meeting on Thursday,... Korea's central bank took a wait-and-see approach in August.

It kept its key rate unchanged at one-and-a-quarter percent,... standing pat on the historic-low rate for the second straight month. 

The central bank made a surprise move in June, lowering the key rate by a quarter-of-a-percentage point.
Market analysts had been expecting the BOK's decision this month... as the central bank wants to see whether the government's stimulus package helps bolster the economy that's in doldrums.

The measure originally laid out in June... includes an extra budget worth roughly ten billion U.S. dollars.
Uncertainties also linger over snowballing household debt,... while concerns are mounting that the government's corporate restructuring drive and anti-corruption law, due to come into force next month,... could hurt consumption towards the end of this year. 

And conditions abroad are far from rosy.

The central bank has its hands full... with a possible rate hike on the cards in the U.S.... and Britain's decision to leave the European Union. 

But facing growing calls for more easing, eyes are now focused on the central bank's next move. 

The Korean economy grew in the zero-percent range for the third straight quarter in the April-to-June period from a quarter earlier,... fueling concerns Korea is stumbling into a low-growth rut.

Despite a slight improvement in the jobs market in June,... growth slowed again last month.
This comes as the impact of Korea's corporate restructuring begins to be felt,... especially in regions where the country's major shipyards are located.

Kim Min-ji breaks down the numbers for us. Korea's job market showed weak growth in July.
Statistics Korea says the country added 298-thousand jobs last month from a year ago,... bringing the total number of employed to over 26-point-six million.

July's figure marks a slowdown from June, when job growth rose above the 300-thousand level for the first time in three months. "The slowdown comes on the back of a decline in the manufacturing sector. It saw a dip of 65-thousand workers, falling for the first time in four years. This is due to slowing exports,... as well as a slump in the shipbuilding and automobile industries."

The government's ongoing corporate restructuring drive is also taking a toll on specific industries and regions... with the country's shipbuilding hubs,... bearing the brunt... and seeing their jobless rates climb.
But this is not all without hope. The youth employment rate edged up to 43-point-six percent,... while the youth jobless rate fell to nine-point-two percent,... from ten-point-three in June.

While the government has vowed to boost job creation and dull the impact from restructuring,... through a budget supplement worth roughly ten billion U.S. dollars... experts question the viability of these claims. "Of the supplementary budget, only about two billion dollars will be set aside for job creation and another two billion for corporate restructuring, so the impact will be limited. It may have a positive effect on related industries in the short-run.

Although reshaping faltering industries remains the biggest downside risk for the job market in the latter half of the year,... the consensus is that the country needs more policies to support youth employment. Experts say in the long-run,... the government needs to draw up more substantial measures to create better quality jobs... and only then can it be considered tangible progress in the job market.

Moving on to 2016 Rio Olympics... and day four was a golden day for Team Korea and, in particular, young Korean fencer Park Sang-young. 

For more on his remarkable performance that caught many by surprise,... and the rest of the day's action,... Lee Un-shin reports.


Standing atop the podium and beaming with pride,...the 20-year-old fencer could barely contain his elation.
Bringing home Korea's third gold of the Rio Olympics, and its very first in Epee,... Korea's Park Sang-young defeated Geza Imre of Hungary 15-14 in the final. 

The crowd was on the edge of their seats throughout the thrilling match.

At one point, Imre was just a point away from victory, leading 14-10, but in a stunning comeback Park scored five points in a row to seal a historic victory. 

The first time Olympian dropped to his knees to soak in his triumph.

It was especially impressive when you consider Park -- ranked 21st in the world, beat a 41-year-old Olympic veteran who is ranked third in the world.

And his route to the final, was no easy ride either.

On his way to gold,... he also defeated Italy's Enrico Garozzo, the world's second best fencer, displaying a range of calm, yet fiercely aggressive attacks.

On top of Park's golden performance,... Team Korea's Chang Hye-jin and Lee Seung-yun on Tuesday comfortably fired their way into the round of 16 in the women's and men's individual archery events.

한국 상대 수입 규제 179건..정부 업계, 대응방안 논의
Korea's trade ministry says it will work to reduce the number of sanctions leveled against Korean industries and resolve ongoing disputes. 

The remarks come after the Korea Trade Association reported Korea is on the receiving end of over 179 trade sanctions by 31 countries.

Anti-dumping regulations were the most common sanctions, at 125 cases.

Safeguarding, or the act of placing tariffs on imports that could damage the domestic market, was second, with 47 cases, while anti-subsidy duties ranked third, with seven cases.

India has filed for the most sanctions against Korea, with 32 claims, followed by the United States, with 23.
The steel and metal industries were the most common target, with 87 sanctions, followed by chemical companies, textiles and electrical goods.

Incheon International Airport has claimed many honors since it opened 15 years ago.
But it seems Korea's gateway is still hungry for excellence.
Hwang Hojun has this report.
Incheon International Airport has been recognized as the best airport in the world by the Airports Council International for an eleventh straight year.
It's the highest accolade an airport can receive.
But there's more.
The airport has also surpassed the 500-million mark for accumulated number of visitors... and has the eighth highest international passenger traffic in the world.


"It means they're doing their job very well. And it is easy to navigate and people are helpful."

The airport strives to impress its customers with amenities such as premium duty-free shops, a quality medical center, a movie theater and even a spa.
Visitors can also experience Korean culture through the multiple cultural events scheduled throughout the day.
However, a great amount of effort is necessary for the airport to maintain its high standard of service.


"Complacency does not seem to be an issue. I'm coming back next year, looking forward to it, and I expect that the things that I like will still be here, and I'll be surprised by something new."

The airport has also had to overcome its share of challenges.
Earlier this year, there were a couple of embarrassing security breaches and luggage mishandling incidents.


"The airport is already reaching its maximum capacity, which is the main cause of those mishaps. But we'll be able to prevent issues like these, as we'll get much more breathing room when the third phase of our construction project is done in 2017."

The project includes a second terminal, which will allow the airport to support over 62 million passengers and a thousand flights a day.
The airport has also signed an agreement to build a resort called Inspire, with completion set for 2020.
The facility will include six-star hotels, theme parks, shopping centers and a casino -- all practically adjacent to the airport.


"Winning the best airport service quality award for 11 consecutive years is an impressive accomplishment. But there are still hurdles to overcome, and Korea's flagship airport plans to continue to evolve and put the needs of its customers first.
