FTSE 100 made a positive start, climbing 61 points to 7,270. Miners Glencore, Rio Tinto and Antofagasta lead the way on London’s blue chip-index. FTSE 100 edged higher, gaining 35 points to 7,157 even as the UK’s biggest rail strike in thirty years got underway. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to condemn the unions ahead of today’s Cabinet meeting. Kantar’s latest data showed that grocery inflation in the last four weeks hit 8.3%, its highest level in 13 years. It will mean an additional £380 is spent on groceries this year, said the market research firm. Rolls-Royce will be giving members of staff a one-off payment to help with the rising cost of living crisis. More than 14,000 members of staff will be given a £2,000 payment. Ocado has completed a quick-fire £575mln fundraiser, issuing new shares to institutional investors for 795p each – more than a third of their value at their peak early last year. The online grocer, which has parlayed this expertise into technology and fulfilment, will use the funds, including an additional £3mln contributed by retail investors, to maintain its expansion plans. Cadbury’s owner Mondelez is buying US energy bar maker Clif Bar & Company. The deal is worth over £2bn and will help drive its plans to “lead the future of snacking.” Reabold Resources has revealed details of how the West Newton field on Humberside will progress once permission to go ahead is forthcoming. The conceptual development plan envisages a predominantly gas development project. Currency specialist Record reported a significant jump in revenues and profit, up roughly 40% and 60% respectively, in its full year results. The improvement reflects its switch away from just forex, said the statement.

FTSE 100 was going nowhere in early dealings rather like Boris Johnson even though 41% of his MP colleagues voted against him in last night’s no-confidence motion. Whether the PM will eventually have to go seemed to matter less to investors than China easing its Covid restrictions with the index down 2 at 7,605.

Biffa is the latest UK company in the sights of US private equity. The waste recycler has received a £1.4bn, 445p per share, takeover approach from Energy Capital, which Biffa’s board say they are minded to accept.

FTSE 100 opened higher, climbing 57 points to 7,529, following in the footsteps of some of the other markets across the globe as talks about a ceasefire in Ukraine seemed to be making some headway.

 

April’s energy price hike will cause the biggest shock to incomes since the 1950s. Using the Office for Budget Responsibility's own projections, the bills would represent 8% of household spending on average.

Investment UK - Gas concerns continue with Avro Energy and Green going bust and Royal Mail parcels demand slows: Proactive

FTSE 100 started in the green as some clear direction seemingly from the US Fed on its interest rate intentions overshadowed ongoing concerns about the Evergrande crisis. London’s leading index added 22 points to 7,106 in early trading.   There was more turmoil in UK gas sector as two more suppliers Avro Energy and Green stopped trading on Wednesday and affecting 830,000 customers in total. They will still receive energy while Ofgem appoints a new supplier.   Royal Mail PLC (LSE:RMG) said parcel volumes have slowed sharply since the easing of lockdown restrictions. The postal group kept guidance for profits unchanged but says the outlook is not clear.   Pub and restaurant group Mitchells & Butlers PLC (LSE:MAB) sales have recovered almost to 2019 levels since reopening in May. Food outlets are doing better than drink-focused sites said the All Bar One owner.   City Pub meanwhile says trading in town centre sites has benefited from the return to work and to university during September. Like Mitchells, it sales are running at above 90% of 2019 levels and it continues with its expansion plans, having today acquired a hotel in Norfolk. Chill Brands announced the launch of a new product line to complement its CBD range. Its tobacco-free nicotine flavour pouches, licensed from Next Generation Labs, will be stocked in shops in its extensive US retail network and online at Chill.com from the fourth quarter. Benchmark Holdings PLC (AIM:BMK) said its CleanTreat water purification system won the highest level of recognition from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). It was awarded a zero on the ASC’s rating scale, the best possible score.
