GENEVA — The United Nations human rights office said on Tuesday that it had verified 1,335 civilian casualties in Ukraine, including 474 killed and 861 injured, since Russia’s invasion began on Feb. 24.

But the civilian toll was incomplete pending corroboration of reports, it said in a statement: “This concerns, for example, the towns of Volnovakha, Mariupol, Izium where there are allegations of hundreds of civilian casualties.”

 March 9 (Reuters) - At least 1,170 civilians have been killed in Ukraine's besieged city of Mariupol since the start of the Russian invasion, a Ukrainian state information agency said on Wednesday, citing figures from Mariupol's deputy mayor.

"At least 1,170 people have been killed and 47 were buried in a mass grave today," deputy mayor Serhiy Orlov was quoted as saying. "People are without water, heat, electricity, gas, residents are melting snow to drink."

The U.K. government on Thursday sanctioned Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, freezing all his assets including the English Premier League soccer club Chelsea, as part of a broader sanctions effort that targets assets owned by several Russian oligarchs with close ties to Vladimir Putin’s regime.

Shares in Evraz, the London-listed steel company controlled by Roman Abramovich, has been halted following news that the UK was imposing sanctions on the Russian oligarch.The Financial Conduct Authority said it was suspending trading in the shares “in order to protect investors pending clarification of the impact of the UK sanctions”.

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday there were few things more depraved than the targeting of vulnerable and defenceless people, after Ukraine accused Russia of bombing a children's hospital in the port city of Mariupol.

Roman Abramovich is selling Chelsea Football Club after almost two decades of ownership. The billionaire's ties to Russia are being scrutinized. He is seeking 3 billion-pounds from the sale of the football club and has said that net proceeds will go to a foundation for Ukraine war victims. 

 

The billionaire hasn't been personally sanctioned by the U.K., but it highlights the global scramble by oligarchs to keep assets from being frozen and seized by international governments after sanctions were announced.
