US - Should Firing Squads Replace Lethal Injections? VICE News Tonight on HBO

As states struggle with supplies of drugs used for lethal injections and with the fallout from some recent botched executions, some of the 31 states where the death penalty is legal are looking at firing squads as a backup form of execution.

Ronnie Lee Gardner was the last man killed by firing squad in the United States, in 2010. His brother, Randy Gardner, is now an advocate for ending capital punishment.

VICE News talks to Randy as well as reporter Sheryl Worsley, who witnessed the execution. We also speak with a professor who has studied capital punishment and believes that death by firing squad is actually better than death by lethal injection.

Lake Mead, one of the most critical water sources in the country, is at dangerously low levels and federal employees are struggling to manage the depleted reserves.

The Las Vegas-area lake has been held in place by the Hoover Dam since the 1930s, and many thousands of homes, farms, and businesses in the Southwest depend on its water to survive. But America’s largest reservoir may be in jeopardy. Two decades ago, Lake Mead was 98 percent full, but thanks to a years-long drought, it has dropped to only 38 percent full.

VICE News went to Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam to speak with the Bureau of Reclamation, the government body that regulates and controls the water for much of the drought-stricken Southwest.

Kenya - The World's Largest Refugee Camp May Be Closing: VICE News Tonight on HBO: VICE News

The high court in Kenya has blocked the government’s bid to close Dadaab, the largest refugee camp in the world. The Kenyan government had hoped to close Dadaab by the end of November, but as the day approached, the registered refugees living there were given a six-month extension.

The Kenyan government has vowed to fight the ruling and close down the camp — which they say has become a recruiting ground for terrorists.

Dadaab is home to more than 275,000 people, many of whom were displaced after fleeing the Somali civil war in 1991. If the camp were to shut down, the refugees would effectively be homeless and stateless.

So where does a population larger than that of 11 African capital cities go? VICE News reports from the camp and speaks to the people facing an uncertain future.

US - America's First Offshore Wind Farm Just Started Producing Energy: VICE News Tonight on HBO: VICE News

The first offshore wind farm in the United States started producing clean energy in mid-December. Located 13 miles from the coast of Rhode Island, the five turbines will power 17,000 homes, including all the energy necessary to sustain the nearby Block Island.

The wind energy industry is the fastest-growing job sector in the country. Despite their popularity in Europe, however, coastal turbines have faced resistance in the U.S.

“We have a huge, clean energy resource off of our coast, and to date we have not tapped into it,” Deepwater Wind CEO Jeff Grybowski told VICE News correspondent Arielle Duhaime-Ross.

Take A Ride In One Of The World's First Self Driving Trucks: VICE News Tonight

Self-driving cars may be on their way, but a driverless truck has already arrived. Self-driving truck company Otto completed its first delivery in October, a 120-mile journey through Denver traffic with no one behind the wheel.

In August, Uber bought Otto for $680 million. Morgan Stanley estimates that self-driving trucks could save the trucking industry $168 billion a year, and about $70 billion of that would come from labor savings.

About 3.5 million Americans work in trucking, one of the last well-paying fields available to people without a college education. Self-driving technology could soon replace some of those workers.

Self-driving trucks are expected to take over highways sooner than self-driving cars because highway driving is an easier technological challenge to solve. “There’s hopefully no pedestrians, there’s no stop lights, it’s easier to automate or have a self-driving vehicle on the highway most of the day,” Otto co-founder Lior Ron told VICE News correspondent Ravi Somaiya in Denver.

Otto trucks use a variety of sensors to read the road to decide when to accelerate, steer, or hit the brakes. Otto claims its technology is likely much safer than a human driver.

Otto is still testing its trucks, but it expects to sell a kit for tens of thousands of dollars to make any truck drive itself.

Russian “roofers” climb to dizzying heights to capture the perfect selfie, becoming internet celebrities along the way. But roofing isn’t just about danger and adrenaline, Kirill Vselensky told VICE News correspondent Gianna Toboni. “It’s a way to have adventure without leaving the city.”

Some of Vselensky’s more than 50,000 Instagram followers now pay him for tours, and corporate sponsors are starting to fund even wilder stunts. “It’s my main source of income,” he said.

When he’s traveling, Vselensky roofs to learn about a new city from an aerial perspective. “I was in Istanbul where we climbed the Blue Mosque, and in Cairo I climbed the Egyptian pyramids,” he added.
