Canada - Covid-19 or neglect? Canada reflects on heavy death toll in nursing homes + : France 24 English

13 May 2021

The most tragic Covid-19 legacy in Canada will be the deaths of the elderly in nursing homes. Seven out of 10 fatalities occurred in Canadian care homes used to house senior citizens, almost 30 percent more than in other nations. The worst-hit provinces were Ontario and Quebec. But as our correspondents Gloria Henriquez and François Rihouay report, not all the deaths were directly from Covid-19.

UK - 40,000 deaths: UK second only to United States in passing grim milestone: BBC News 7.68M subscribers

The UK has passed a grim milestone — more than 40,000 people have now died after testing positive for coronavirus. Britain is only the second country in the world to reach that number, after the United States which has a population five times the size of the UK.

357 deaths were recorded in the latest 24 hour period, bringing the total across the UK to 40,261. There is new evidence that the numbers of new infections in the community is falling.

An Office for National Statistics study of adults and children in private households estimates that 1 in 1,000 people in England tested positive for the coronavirus in the last week of May.

That’s down from last week's estimate of 1 in 400. But it does not include people in hospitals and care homes. However, one study suggests that the number of new cases is some part of England may still be increasing.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reports from Health Editor Hugh Pym, Allan Little and Science Editor David Shukman.

UK - More than 60,000 “excess deaths” so far during UK coronavirus pandemic: BBC News 7.66M subscribers

The number of newly-recorded deaths linked to Covid-19 in England and Wales has fallen to its lowest level for 7 weeks according to the Office for National Statistics.

But on a separate measure of excess deaths from March to May across the UK, there were almost 62,000 more deaths than might have been expected compared to previous years.

The elderly have suffered most from the pandemic and care homes have been particularly affected. One care home in County Durham has lost 25 residents from the disease.

Meanwhile a report by Public Health England has found that although age is the biggest risk factor when it comes to Covid-19, black, Asian and other ethnic minority communities in the UK are more likely than others to die from the disease.

Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting from Michael Buchanan and Rianna Croxford.
