Tensions were mounting on Sunday night in the Calais migrant camp nicknamed the "jungle" ahead of its destruction this week.
As night fell, groups of migrants lit bonfires using portable toilets on a sandy no-man's land on the camp's edge that authorities carved out earlier this year to push camp inhabitants away from a road leading to port and ferries to England.
Police watched on and occasionally fired teargas to disperse the crowds, advancing towards the migrants lighting the flames who kept their distance.
