Headlines from the Proactive UK newsroom. The FTSE 100 headed lower going into the bank holiday weekend on concern over the spat between China and US over Hong Kong. The blue-chip index was 110 points lower at 5,904.

UK monthly borrowing hit a record £62.1bn in April as the government covered the cost to the economy of the Covid-19 outbreak. Funding furlough schemes alone amounted to £14bn. Retail sales underlined the pressure on the UK economy with a fall of 18.1% in April, down from 5.2% in March. Clothing sales more than halved.

Burberry PLC’s (LON:BRBY) yearly profits tumbled as the luxury goods group took a £245mln stock and impairment charge. The raincoat, bags and clothing maker added it was also not able to give guidance for the current year but had seen a pick-up of sales in Korea and China.

Genedrive PLC’s (LON:GDR) COVID Kit has been given the regulatory go-ahead to be sold across the EU. The kit is a diagnostic test designed to detect active infection in COVID-19 patients.

Tekcapital PLC (LON:TEK) investee company Guident has won a competition calling it one of the “most promising start-ups in South Florida”. The competition provides start-ups with an opportunity to join a year-long program.

Tiziana Life Sciences PLC (LON:TILS, NASDAQ:TLSA) is planning to spin out its StemPrintER and SPARE genomics-based personalised medicine businesses as a separate stock market quoted company. This will allow it to secure independent funding.

Investment - Morning Report: FTSE 100 strengthens on hopes for global easing of lockdown restrictions: Proactive

Headlines from the Proactive UK newsroom. The FTSE 100 climbed nearly 60 points higher on hopes for a worldwide easing of coronavirus lockdowns restrictions. Boris Johnson is to outline the UK’s plans on Sunday.

New car registrations slowed to a standstill in April after coronavirus lockdown measures were introduced, according to new trade figures. Only 4,000 cars were registered in April, a 97% drop on a year ago. Car dealerships have been closed as part of the virus restrictions. Ryanair, meanwhile, flew only 40,000 passengers in April compared to 13.5mln a year ago as the coronavirus restrictions grounded its fleet. The airline operated 600 flights, or 99% less than budgeted.

Cruise operator Carnival PLC(LON:CCL) has been forced to defend plans to resume some services in North America from August after they were met with a barrage of criticism. The FTSE250-listed group said it intended to phase-in services from Miami, Port Canaveral and Galveston from the 1st of August using eight ships.

Genedrive (LON:GDR) is to raise up to £8mln to fund development of its two coronavirus diagnostic assays. The funding at 80p was primarily with institutional investors.

BATM’s (LON:BVC) Adaltis subsidiary has launched new test kits that diagnose if a patient has had COVID-19 by detecting antibodies present in their blood. They're fully CE certified and the Group has commenced shipping initial orders to several customers in Europe.

Gaming Realms (LON:GMR) is to launch its Slingo Orginals game on the 888 platform after extending its licensing and revenue share agreement with the FTSE 250 group. The entire Slingo Originals portfolio is now available on 888casino.com.

Investment - Morning Report: FTSE 100 lower as first quarter RBS profits halve on cornavirus hit: Proactive

Headlines from the Proactive UK newsroom. The FTSE 100 was lower again on a downbeat update from RBS. UK manufacturing figures also revealed factories had their worst month in three decades.

Royal Bank of Scotland 's (LON:RBS) profits almost halved in the first quarter of the year as it took impairment losses of £802mln, including £628mln for possible coronavirus bad debts. Profit before tax was £519mln, down 66% on the preceding quarter.

Ryanair has started a restructuring programme that will see 3,000 jobs go, salary cuts of up to 20% and the temporary closures of aircraft bases. The airline expects to operate less than 1% of its usual flying programme in the quarter to June.

Apple Inc’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) earnings fell less than expected in the past quarter as a surge in digital services offset weak iPhone sales. Turnover rose 1% as demand for things such as Apple News rocketed, but there is no guidance going forward.

Fellow tech titan Amazon, meanwhile, stunned investors as its announced US$4bn of spending or the equivalent of a quarter’s profits on coronavirus safety measures for staff and customers. Amazon’s sales soared 26% over the past quarter.

Genedrive (LON:GDR) has completed the last significant manufacturing milestone in the co-development of its coronavirus diagnostics kit. The overall project plan currently remains on track and the company is targeting European regulation in approximately 3 weeks.

MaxCyte PLC (LON:MXCT) has raised £25mln ahead of a NASDAQ listing. It's the start of a “new and exciting growth chapter” said the cell-based medicine specialist.
