Hoegok Brewery Agriculture, making traditional Korean makgeolli / 전통주 막걸리 제조기업 '회곡양조장'

There is a manufacturer of traditional alcoholic beverages which have become popular among people all around the world. Since its establishment in 1925, Hoegok Brewery Agriculture has been passed down as a family business over three generations. It has produced makgeolli, a traditional alcoholic beverage that is made with 100% Korean rice. It has produced makgeolli by keeping the original taste and modernizing the manufacturing facilities. And after going through the long fermentation period at a low temperature, makgeolli can have a clean taste without bad smells or hangovers. The company has developed Yemi-ju, which is made with white pearl rice produced based on the agreement with Andong Nonghyup, and Gobaek-ju. We meet Hoegok Brewery Agriculture, a company that has spent a lot of time on developing new technologies that can keep the original flavor of Korean traditional alcoholic beverages.

Fintech is emerging as the hottest topic in the financial sector. The emergence of fintech is prompting a shift to hand-held finances and a cashless society throughout the entire financial sector. 85% of all financial transactions in Korea already take place through fintech, and the market is growing by 20% each year. Competitions is also fierce among corporations to secure an advantage of fintech, as it has been recognized as a high added value industry and the mainstream of finance. Amid such development, security issues have emerged as a hurdle to further promoting fintech in the long run. We examine the present state of fintech, as it changes the financial environment in Korea, and look into ways to secure a role of leadership.

On February 13, major news media organizations around the world reported on the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's half-brother Kim Jong-nam. Despite being the eldest son of late leader Kim Jong-il, Kim Jong-nam had fallen out of favor with his father, handing the third-generation succession to his younger brother. Many believe Kim Jong-un was behind the murder of his half-brother given that Malaysian police identified the key suspects as being North Korean nationals. Kim Jong-nam is said to have long lived in fear of assassination. What was the reason behind his unexpected death?

Impact of Kim Jong-nam's murder
Six days after Kim Jong-nam's death, Seoul concluded that the North Korean regime was most certainly behind the attack. The incident sparked discussion about security issues within South Korean political circles, with some arguing that Seoul should speed up its deployment of the U.S. missile defense system THAAD. There has also been action from China. On February 18, its commerce ministry announced it would suspend coal imports from North Korea until the end of this year. Some experts believe that the continual missile tests by Pyongyang and the death of Kim Jong-nam have led to greater pressure from China. We sit down to discuss what other impact the murder of Kim Jong-nam will have in the region.

Advent of T-UHD TV Service
In February 2017, Korea will launch the world's first terrestrial ultra high definition TV, or T-UHD TV service. In preparation for the landmark launch, broadcasters, equipment manufacturers and the government are working closely with one another. What preparations are currently underway and how will the new service benefit viewers? In response to a changing broadcasting landscape, broadcasters are developing a UHD broadcast transmission system, while new technologies are being introduced to support the reliable transmission and reception of UHD signals. UHD Korea unveiled UHD TV antennas, and DS Broadcast developed the world's first professional broadcast encoder that supports the T-UHD broadcast standard. In addition to clear, crisp images, UHD broadcasting will offer enhanced viewer interactivity. Terrestrial broadcasters are preparing a variety of new interactive services that can boost direct reception rates. Satellite broadcaster Skylife, for its part, has introduced interactive features for its dedicated UHD channel, while Aircode has launched a metadata solution that provides information about given content.
